Symptoms

Most cysts may not cause any symptom and maybe picked up on ultrasound accidentally. Some however may cause symptoms like-

  1. Lower abdomen pain or fullness or heaviness
  2. Sudden severe abdominal pain may occur if there is a complication like twisting of cyst, or its rupture or if there is bleeding into cyst.

Types of cysts

Functional cysts-

Ovaries normally grow cyst-like structures every month called follicle. They release egg on maturity. If a normal monthly follicle keeps growing, it’s known as a functional cyst. There are two types of functional cysts:

Follicular cyst-

It happens when the follicle doesn’t rupture or release its egg, but continues to grow.

Corpus luteum cyst –

When a follicle releases its egg, it begins producing certain hormones for conception. This follicle is now called the corpus luteum. Sometimes, fluid accumulates inside the follicle, causing the corpus luteum to grow into a cyst.

Functional cysts are usually harmless, rarely cause pain, and often disappear on their own within two or three menstrual cycles.

Dermoid cysts-

They form from primitive cells and can contains odd structures like hair, skin, teeth etc. They’re rarely cancerous.

Cystadenomas

These develop on the surface of an ovary and might be filled with a watery or a mucous material.

Endometriomas (Chocolate cyst)-

These occur as a result of a condition in which uterine endometrial cells grow outside your uterus (endometriosis). It can cause various pelvic organs to stick to each other and to pelvic wall.

If the cyst becomes large, it may move out of its position causing painful twisting called ovarian torsion. Ovarian torsion may also result in decreasing or stopping blood flow to the ovary.

Complications

Ovarian torsion It is twisting of ovary leading to compromise in its blood supply and causing severe pain. Symptoms can include an abrupt onset of severe pelvic pain, nausea and vomiting

Rupture A cyst that ruptures can cause severe pain and internal bleeding. The larger the cyst, the greater the risk of rupture.

Diagnosis

A cyst may be found during pelvic examination. Possible tests include:

Pregnancy test.
Pelvic ultrasound.
CA 125 blood test.
CT or MRI scan
