Causes and Risk Factors

Inadequate water intake
Family history
Previous history of kidney stone
Obesity
Polycystic Kidney Disease

Types

Calcium – most common – made of calcium and oxalate or phosphate
Uric acid – when urine is too acidic.
Struvite – by urinary tract infections in which bacteria make ammonia
Cystine – rare – happen in people who have a genetic disorder that causes cystine to leak into urine
Kidney stones can be very small to almost entirely filling up the kidney. Kidney stone can slip into ureter and get stuck inside it or may pass further into urinary bladder. Some small stones may pass out through urine. A moving stone or a stone that causes obstruction to flow of urine usually cause severe pain.

Treatment

Small stones:

Plenty of fluids and pain killers (if there is pain) may push the stone out of urinary system.

Large stones or if small but not getting flushed out and causing obstruction – Some type of surgical treatment may be necessary.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) – uses ultrasonic shock waves to break stones into small fragments to let them pass through urinary system. One sitting may take 45 to 60 minutes and may need repeated sittings.

PerCutaneous NephroLithotomy (PCNL) – a tube is inserted directly into kidney to remove the stone. This has replaced large incisions which used to be used for kidney stones in past. A small cut of about 1 cm is usually enough for this procedure and hospital stay is just 1 to 3 days. Recovery is very fast and pain very less.

Prevention

The best way is to drink enough liquids every day (8 to 12 cups). Once stone is removed, its examination in laboratory can tell which type of stone it is and doctor may recommend a specific diet for the same.
